THE BEATS PORTFOLIO contains 4 silver gelatin photographs, each measuring 11” x 14” (27.9 x 35.6 cm). Each photograph is signed and numbered by the photographer on the reverse with a hand-written description of each print. The set also contains a letterpress-printed broadside for the poem "Allen Ginsberg 1926-1997". Broadside and inserts are printed on handmade St. Armand’s paper. The clamshell case is fully bound in black morocco leather with Asahi Japanese book cloth interiors. All materials are acid-free and archival. Limited to an edition of 5 copies of which only 4 are for sale. $4000.00
About the Photographer
Gerard Malanga was born in the Bronx in 1943. An accomplished poet, filmmaker, and photographer, his first monograph, Resistance to Memory , appeared in 1998 with an introductory essay by Ben Maddow, and a poem by Thurston Moore, followed by Screen Tests Portraits Nudes 1964-1996 (2000), Someone’s Life (2009), Souls (2010), Ghostly Berms (2012) and Photobooths (2013). Malanga was one of the leading creative geniuses of the avant-garde New York scene during the 1960s and 1970s, most noted for his photography, poetry, and filmmaking. He was deeply associated with Andy Warhol during the factory years at the height of the 60s underground. Time Magazine called him (Warhol’s) most important associate.
